Why is Appuldurcombe House said to be haunted?
Appuldurcombe House, the roofless shell of an 18th-century Baroque mansion on the Isle of Wight, is widely called the island's most haunted site. Staff at the visitor centre report a monk seen moving through the cellars, and a female figure said to drift down the staircase toward where the library once stood. In the cellar space, some describe "shadow dancers" -- dark shapes twirling as if still at a ball held centuries ago. The house's darkest recorded tragedy dates to 1587, when two young sons of owner Richard Worsley were killed in an explosion at the gatehouse; visitors near the site of the former Great Hall report sudden temperature drops and the sensation of being watched, and some claim to hear a baby crying. Badly damaged by a German bomber during the Second World War, the ruin -- now managed by English Heritage -- draws ghost hunters and paranormal investigators, including a televised visit from "Most Haunted".
