Why is Ballechin House said to be haunted?
Ballechin House, a Georgian mansion near Grandtully in Perthshire, became one of the most scrutinized hauntings in Victorian Britain after Major Robert Stewart, a devout believer in reincarnation, died there in 1876 vowing to return in the body of one of his beloved black spaniels. Soon after, tenants reported phantom dogs pacing the corridors, slamming doors and unexplained rappings, prompting the Society for Psychical Research to send investigator Ada Goodrich-Freer for an extended stay in 1897. Her detailed, controversial report β later disputed for embellishment β cemented Ballechin's national reputation and drew journalists and skeptics alike. The house fell into disrepair through the 20th century and was demolished around 1963, but the case remains a textbook reference in British ghost-hunting history, cited long after the building itself vanished.
