Why is Berry Pomeroy Castle said to be haunted?

Rising above a wooded gorge in South Devon, Berry Pomeroy Castle combines a 15th-century fortress with a grand Tudor mansion built by the Seymour family after they bought the estate in 1547; it was abandoned by the late 1600s and has stood in ruin ever since. Two ghosts dominate its legend. The White Lady, said to be Margaret Pomeroy, is reported drifting through the dungeon where her jealous sister Eleanor supposedly imprisoned and starved her to death over a rivalry for a man's affection. The Blue Lady, seen in St Margaret's Tower, is described beckoning visitors toward the battlements, said to be the ghost of a Pomeroy daughter who smothered her illegitimate child and now wanders in grief.
