Why is Borthwick Castle said to be haunted?

Twelve miles southeast of Edinburgh, Borthwick Castle — one of Scotland's largest and best-preserved medieval tower houses, built in 1430 for Sir William Borthwick — is remembered for sheltering Mary, Queen of Scots and the Earl of Bothwell during their brief, doomed marriage in June 1567, shortly before confederate lords besieged the castle. According to tradition, Mary escaped the siege disguised as a page boy, slipping out at night to join Bothwell, a flight that local ghostlore says left an imprint on the building: guests and staff over the centuries have reported a woman's footsteps on the great stair and a cold presence in the room said to have been hers. Now run as a private hotel, Borthwick still displays the marks reportedly left by cannon fire from the 1567 siege on its southeast tower.
