Why is Bruce Castle said to be haunted?
Bruce Castle in Tottenham dates in part to the 16th century, and its best-known legend centres on Constantia Lucy, wife of a later owner, who is said to have been locked away in an upper room by her jealous husband and to have fallen, or thrown herself, to her death from a window in the 17th century. Local tradition holds that her screams can still be heard echoing around the tower on Twelfth Night, the anniversary most often attached to her death, and generations of Tottenham residents have reported hearing a woman crying from the upper floors at other times of year as well. When the house served as a school in the Victorian era, pupils and masters wrote of unexplained footsteps and sudden chills in the tower stairwell, and museum staff today still describe a reluctance to be the last person locking up the building at night.
