Why is Burford said to be haunted?

On 17 May 1649, three Leveller mutineers of the New Model Army — Cornet James Thompson, Corporal Perkins and Private Church — were shot by firing squad against the wall of Burford's parish church of St John the Baptist, on Oliver Cromwell's orders, after their regiment rebelled over pay and political rights. Their names are still scratched into the leaden font inside, reportedly carved by Thompson himself the night before his execution. Townsfolk have long spoken of footsteps and low voices near the churchyard wall each May, and some claim to have seen three shadowy figures standing where the soldiers fell, a moment now marked every year by the Levellers' Day commemoration held in the town.
