Why is Bursledon said to be haunted?

Bursledon, a shipbuilding village on the River Hamble in Hampshire, carries several local ghost tales rooted in its industrial past. On Coal Park Lane, an old Victorian railway bridge is said to be haunted by Polly Crook, a woman remembered for her fondness for distilled cider and a clay pipe, who according to legend accidentally set herself alight on the spot. At nearby Manor Farm, a 15th-century farmhouse recorded in the Domesday Book, visitors and staff describe ghostly apparitions, unexplained lights and poltergeist-style disturbances across the outbuildings and grounds. The former Bursledon Brickworks, now a working museum, has its own reported presence: footsteps crossing the cobbled yard, whistling with no visible source, murmured male conversation after closing time, and a tall dark figure some say looms over visitors in the dark. Ghost-hunt events are still held at both Manor Farm and the Brickworks today.
