Why is Carbisdale Castle said to be haunted?
Built in 1907 for the exiled Duchess of Sutherland and later run as a youth hostel until 2011, Carbisdale Castle collected ghost stories from generations of guests. Room 218, the former nursery, became known as the 'Spook Room' after repeated reports of beds turning around on their own, children's voices, and rain falling indoors; a hooded figure nicknamed Betty is said to drift through the property in white. In the castle's link corridor, visitors have described an angry, sword-carrying apparition dressed for the 1650 Battle of Carbisdale fought nearby. Older tales speak of phantom bagpipes and organ music heard even before the castle was built, and of a gardener, George Murray, who once looked up to see a woman in a flowing white dress standing beside a bush β and then nothing.
