Why is Castle Levan said to be haunted?
Overlooking the Firth of Clyde at Gourock, Castle Levan traces its origins to the 14th century, though most of the surviving tower dates from an enlargement after 1547 under the Ardgowan estate's Shaw and Stewart families. Local tradition claims the castle as the true setting behind the Sleeping Beauty story: a daughter of the house, so the tale goes, was cursed at birth and later pricked her finger on a spindle, falling into an enchanted sleep within the tower until a suitor's kiss broke the spell centuries later. Alongside the fairy-tale legend, residents and renovators have described unexplained footsteps and cold spots in the older stonework. Renovated in the 1980s and again in 2016 as a bed and breakfast under owner Kim Munro, the castle keeps both its romantic legend and its reputation for uncanny occurrences alive for guests.
