Why is Castle of Mey said to be haunted?
On Scotland's exposed north coast, within sight of Orkney, the Castle of Mey (once Barrogill Castle) is best remembered as the beloved retreat of the Queen Mother, who bought the crumbling 16th-century tower in 1952 and restored it over four decades. Long before her, local tradition already spoke of a "Green Lady," said to be a young woman locked in an upper room by her father after falling for a man beneath her station, who reportedly died there rather than give him up β some versions say she starved, others that she leapt from the tower. Staff at the castle have described unexplained footsteps on the stone stairs and sudden cold in the room now linked to her story. The Queen Mother herself reportedly took the tale in stride, joking she had no objection to sharing the house.
