Why is Chute, Wiltshire said to be haunted?

The scattered hamlets known collectively as "The Chutes" carry two separate ghost traditions. One tells of an elderly woman decapitated after her burial by a dishonest man; her bloodied figure is said to still haunt the manor house where she died. The other dates to the reign of Charles II, when bubonic plague struck Chute and neighboring Vernham Dean. A rector persuaded villagers to isolate on the hill along Chute Causeway, promising to bring food and care β€” then abandoned them out of fear of infection. Locals say his ghost still walks the causeway, unable to escape the guilt of breaking his word. Both stories survive mainly through oral tradition and county ghost-lore compilations rather than contemporary written records.
