LOCATION
Why is Comlongon Castle said to be haunted?
Near Clarencefield in Dumfries and Galloway, the 15th-century tower house of Comlongon Castle carries the tragic legend of Marion Carruthers, a young heiress said to have thrown herself, or been thrown, from the battlements in 1570 rather than accept a marriage forced on her by her family after she refused a suitor. Her body was reportedly found on the rocks below what is still called the "Lady's Tower," and her ghost is said to linger there, sometimes described as a soft crying heard on the wind or a pale figure glimpsed at the parapet. The tower was extended into a Victorian baronial mansion around 1900 and remained with the Murray family until 1984, before being restored as a hotel and wedding venue, where staff still occasionally report unexplained sounds from the old keep at night.
