Why is Craignethan Castle said to be haunted?
Craignethan Castle, above the River Nethan, is known in Scottish ghost-lore for a headless apparition linked to Mary, Queen of Scots. Tradition holds that Mary spent a night here in 1568, sheltering with the Hamilton family shortly before her forces were crushed at the Battle of Langside, after which she fled to England and captivity. Visitors and staff have long reported a headless figure moving through the ruined courtyard and the later house, said by locals to be the queen's restless spirit. Among Scotland's many sites claiming a link to Mary, Craignethan is cited as one of the places where witnesses report seeing her most often. Historians note the overnight stay itself is unconfirmed, but the legend has outlived the castle's walls.
