Why is Culzean Castle said to be haunted?

Perched on cliffs above the Firth of Clyde near Maybole, Culzean Castle — remodeled by Robert Adam for the Kennedy family starting in 1777 — sits above a network of sea caves once used by smugglers, and local legend holds that a ghostly piper still plays somewhere within them. The story tells of a young piper sent underground to prove the caves connected to the castle, ordered to play his pipes continuously so those above could track his progress; the music grew fainter and finally stopped, and the boy was never found. Visitors and staff have reported faint pipe music near Piper's Brae on the castle grounds, especially at dusk. Later home to General Eisenhower, who was gifted lifetime use of an apartment in 1946 in gratitude for his wartime leadership, Culzean pairs its haunted reputation with genuine 20th-century history.
