Why is Duns Castle said to be haunted?

Duns Castle, whose massive Norman keep is traditionally dated to around 1320, stands within a wooded estate outside Duns in Berwickshire, in the Scottish Borders. The grounds are best known for the legend of the White Lady, said to haunt the shores of Hen Poo, the small loch within the castle policies, where tradition holds a young woman drowned generations ago β€” some versions say she was fleeing an unwanted marriage, others that she was betrayed by a lover. Estate workers and visitors walking the loch path at dusk have long reported a pale, drifting figure near the water and an unexplained chill even on warm evenings. The castle later passed to the Hay family, whose descendants still occupy it, and remains largely private, with the wooded nature reserve around Hen Poo open to walkers.
