Why is Duntrune Castle said to be haunted?
On the shore of Loch Crinan in Argyll, Duntrune Castle claims the title of Scotland's oldest continuously inhabited castle and carries one of the country's grimmest ghost legends. During a 17th-century siege, tradition says a Campbell piper held captive by the MacDonalds inside the castle saw an approaching relief force and tried to warn them by playing a coded pibroch on his bagpipes; discovered, his captors reportedly cut off his hands before he died, and threw them to the dogs. His ghost, known locally as the Duntrune Piper, is said to still be heard playing pipe music from the tower, and human hand bones allegedly found beneath a windowsill during 20th-century renovations were taken by some as grim confirmation of the tale. Still a private family home, the castle keeps the legend very much alive.
