LOCATION
Why is Edge Hill, Warwickshire said to be haunted?
Weeks after the first pitched battle of the English Civil War was fought below this Warwickshire escarpment on 23 October 1642, leaving as many as 1,500 dead, local shepherds reported hearing drums, cannon fire and the clash of steel replaying in the night sky over the battlefield. The sightings grew so widespread that King Charles I dispatched royal officers to investigate; several later swore they too witnessed phantom regiments of Cavaliers and Roundheads locked in combat, some even recognizing the ghostly faces of comrades killed in the real battle. Published as a 1643 pamphlet, "A Great Wonder in Heaven," the account is often cited as one of the earliest recorded mass ghost sightings in English history.
