Why is Edinburgh Festival Theatre said to be haunted?

On 9 May 1911, the stage of what was then the Empire Palace Theatre became the scene of one of Scotland's deadliest theatre disasters. The illusionist Sigmund Neuburger, known as "The Great Lafayette," was performing his elaborate horse-and-lion act when a stage lamp toppled and ignited the scenery. Ten people died in the blaze, including Lafayette himself, who was initially identified by his stand-in's costume before his own body was found beneath the stage. He was buried in Piershill Cemetery alongside his beloved horse Arizona, in a funeral procession so vast it stopped traffic across the city. Staff and performers at the rebuilt Festival Theatre have long reported the sensation of being watched from the wings, footsteps crossing the empty stage after hours, and a lingering scent of smoke with no discernible source.
