Why is Edinburgh Playhouse said to be haunted?

The Edinburgh Playhouse, opened in 1929 as a cinema before becoming Scotland's largest working theatre, is said to be haunted by a former stagehand nicknamed "Albert," who reportedly fell to his death from the fly tower or lighting rig sometime in the venue's early decades. Touring crews and resident staff have long passed down stories of unexplained footsteps in the flies, a seat in the upper circle that resists staying folded down, and cold spots backstage blamed on Albert keeping watch over the rigging he once worked. During the Playhouse's 1990s renovation, several construction workers reportedly refused to continue night shifts alone after tools moved or they were called by name in the empty auditorium. The theatre's management has never confirmed the identity behind the story, but "Albert" remains part of the venue's backstage folklore, retold to every new stage crew.
