Why is Eltham Palace said to be haunted?

Eltham Palace was a favoured royal residence through the Middle Ages, and it was here in the 1490s that the young prince who would become Henry VIII spent much of his boyhood beneath the palace's great hammerbeam roof, one of the largest of its kind in England. By the 1930s the medieval hall stood beside a strikingly modern addition, an Art Deco mansion built for the wealthy Courtauld family, and it is this collision of centuries that visitors say has left the palace unusually restless. Staff and English Heritage guides have described the sound of children's laughter in the empty great hall, footsteps crossing the minstrels' gallery when no one is present, and a fleeting glimpse of a boy in Tudor dress near the hall's dais, always gone within seconds. One guide summed it up simply: "the walls remember more kings than the guidebooks do."
