Why is Flitwick Manor said to be haunted?
Flitwick Manor, a Georgian house in Bedfordshire now run as a hotel, is remembered locally for the sorrow of Mrs Brooks, wife of 19th-century owner John Thomas Brooks. She is said to still grieve her daughter Mary Ann, who died in 1848 at age 26, and her transparent figure has reportedly been seen sitting at the foot of beds in what is now Room 7 -- guests have described waking to find a young woman watching them, then fleeing into the corridor in fright. A second presence, a former housekeeper in a black Victorian dress and white cap, was said to intensify during 1990s renovations, when a hidden room believed to be hers was uncovered behind a wall; staff and guests since report cold spots, unexplained footsteps and quiet crying. The manor's reputation grew enough that British television covered it in a 1995 episode of "Strange But True?", cementing its status as one of Bedfordshire's best-known haunted hotels.
