Why is Fyvie Castle said to be haunted?
Fyvie Castle in Aberdeenshire, with parts dating to the 13th century, is bound to two intertwined curses and a famous Green Lady. Legend holds that the medieval wizard Thomas the Rhymer cursed the castle after its laird refused him hospitality, decreeing that no first-born son would inherit until three ancient stones, hidden somewhere on the estate, were reunited within its walls. Separately, Lilias Drummond, wife of the 7th laird, is said to have died of grief or by his hand in 1601 after he took a mistress; the outline of her face reportedly appeared etched into a stone windowsill of the room where she died, still visible and unexplained today. The National Trust for Scotland, which has managed Fyvie since 1984, regularly notes visitor reports of cold spots and unexplained sounds near the Drummond family rooms.
