Why is Gainsborough Old Hall said to be haunted?

Gainsborough Old Hall in Lincolnshire is one of England's best-preserved medieval manor houses, its great timber-framed hall dating to around 1460. Its best-known ghost is the 'White Lady,' widely identified with Anne Askew, a Protestant reformer connected to the Hall's Burgh family who was arrested for heresy, tortured on the rack in the Tower of London, and burned at the stake in 1546 for refusing to recant her faith. Visitors and staff report a cold, pale figure in the upstairs chambers and the Great Hall, most often seen near dusk, along with footsteps on the spiral stair when the building is empty. A separate legend tells of a phantom coach that rattles up the drive on winter nights before vanishing at the gate β€” some link it to the Hall's later owners, others simply call it 'the coach that goes nowhere.'
