Why is Goodrich Castle said to be haunted?

Goodrich Castle's ruins on the Wye are tied to the legend of Alice Birch, a Royalist woman who during the English Civil War fell in love with a Parliamentarian officer, Charles Clifford, against her family's wishes. In 1646, as Cromwell's forces besieged the castle, the couple is said to have tried to flee together on horseback during a violent storm, only to be swept into the swollen River Wye and drowned. Local tradition holds that on stormy nights their ghosts can still be seen galloping toward the river before vanishing into the water, and that a scream is sometimes heard from the rock later dubbed "Alice's Cave," where the pair supposedly sheltered before their final ride. The siege itself is historically documented β€” the castle fell to Parliamentary artillery, including the giant mortar "Roaring Meg" β€” giving the romantic tragedy a genuine wartime backdrop.
