Why is Hermitage Castle said to be haunted?

Standing alone in the remote valley of Hermitage Water in Liddesdale, on the Scottish Borders, Hermitage Castle has long been called one of the most sinister ruins in Scotland. Its darkest legend concerns William de Soulis, a 14th-century lord said to have practiced black magic and abducted local children for his rituals; enraged villagers reportedly seized him and, following a rhyme recorded by local tradition β€” "on the ninth stane they buried him then" β€” boiled him alive in molten lead at the nearby Nine Stane Rig stone circle. The castle also witnessed Mary, Queen of Scots' famous 1566 ride to visit the wounded Earl of Bothwell, a journey that nearly cost her life to fever. Visitors today still describe an oppressive stillness around the ruin, and Historic Environment Scotland, its custodian, notes the site's enduring reputation for uncanny atmosphere.
