Why is Hinton Ampner said to be haunted?
Hinton Ampner is the site of one of Georgian England's best-documented hauntings. Between 1765 and 1772, Mary Ricketts, tenant of the old manor house, kept a detailed diary recording footsteps, slamming doors, disembodied groans and the apparition of a man in a drab coat that she and her servants witnessed repeatedly. Convinced the house was cursed, possibly linked to rumors of an earlier scandal and infant death connected to a former owner, Ricketts eventually abandoned the property; the family later demolished the old house entirely in 1793 and built the present mansion nearby. Ricketts's own written account, still cited by paranormal researchers today, remains one of the most detailed first-hand ghost narratives to survive from 18th-century Britain.
