Why is HM Prison Castle Huntly said to be haunted?
Long before it became Scotland's only open prison, Castle Huntly was a stronghold of the Lyon family, and local legend blames its haunting on a young woman of that household. According to the story, she began a forbidden affair with a servant; once discovered, she was confined to a tower room overlooking the battlements and, unable to bear the isolation, threw herself to her death. Her ghost, the White Lady, has been reported walking the grounds at night ever since. A second figure, a boy in a sailor's double-breasted jacket, has been seen in the same tower room; some connect him to Richard Paterson, son of a later resident, who drowned in the River Tay in 1939. The castle's grim later use as a prison has only deepened its reputation.
