Why is Huntingtower Castle said to be haunted?

Once known as Ruthven Castle before its 17th-century name change, Huntingtower Castle near Perth is home to Scotland's most romantic ghost tale, the "Maiden's Leap." According to tradition, the daughter of a Ruthven earl was discovered by her mother visiting her lover's chamber late at night; to protect her reputation, she reportedly leapt across the roughly three-metre gap between the castle's two towers back to her own room before dawn, a jump servants believed impossible without supernatural aid. Two separate medieval towers, later linked by a connecting range, still stand largely intact, and the site was also where the young King James VI was briefly held captive during the 1582 "Ruthven Raid." Visitors climbing the narrow spiral stairs between the towers still retrace, and sometimes reenact, the leap said to have saved a lady's honor.
