Why is Hylton Castle said to be haunted?

Hylton Castle has stood in Sunderland since the Hylton family first built here after the Norman Conquest, later rebuilt in stone around 1400, and it is home to one of England's oldest and most distinctive ghost stories: the Cauld Lad of Hylton, said to be the spirit of a young stable boy killed, according to legend, by a Baron Hylton in a fit of rage in the 17th or 18th century. Rather than haunting with fear, the Cauld Lad reportedly behaved like a household brownie, tidying rooms left messy overnight and messing up rooms left too tidy, until servants, hoping to release him from his chores, left out a green cloak and hood; folklore collected in the region records him singing as he vanished forever, "here's a cloak and here's a hood, the Cauld Lad of Hylton will do no more good." The tale was recorded by 19th-century folklorists as one of the classic English brownie legends.
