Why is Inveraray Castle said to be haunted?

Seat of the Dukes of Argyll on the shore of Loch Fyne since the 18th century, Inveraray Castle is said to be haunted by a phantom harper, the ghost of an Irish musician allegedly murdered within its walls, possibly during Jacobite-era violence involving Clan Campbell in the 1600s or 1700s, whose harp music is reported to drift through the state rooms on still nights. A second, grimmer tradition holds that a ghostly drummer boy appears or is heard beating his drum shortly before the death of a Duke of Argyll, a family omen recorded across several generations. The current Gothic Revival building, begun in 1746 to designs associated with architect Roger Morris, remains the Campbell family seat, and staff giving evening tours have long described unexplained footsteps and cold spots near the armoury hall.
