Why is Meggernie Castle said to be haunted?
Deep in Glen Lyon — a valley Scottish folklore calls "the longest, loneliest glen in Scotland" — Meggernie Castle guards a grim nursery legend. According to the story, an 18th-century nanny, entrusted with the laird's young son, killed the child in a fit of rage or madness and was afterward walled up, imprisoned, or hanged for the crime, depending on which telling survives. Ever since, the room known as the Nursery is said to carry an oppressive cold that visiting guests refuse to sleep in, and staff over the years have reported a child's cries and small footsteps crossing the floor at night. The Menzies and Wills families who owned Meggernie through the 19th and 20th centuries kept the room shut for long stretches, and some later owners are said to have sealed it entirely.
