Why is Neidpath Castle said to be haunted?
Overlooking the River Tweed a mile from Peebles, the L-plan tower of Neidpath Castle owes its most famous ghost story to a real 17th-century tragedy immortalized by Sir Walter Scott in his poem "The Maid of Neidpath." As the tale goes, Jean Douglas fell in love with a man her father deemed unsuitable and was forbidden to marry him; when her intended returned from abroad, grief and illness had changed her so completely he failed to recognize her, and she reportedly died of a broken heart soon after. Visitors and former residents have long claimed to see a pale figure at an upper window watching the road below, as though still waiting for a rider who never comes. Scott's closing line calls it "a tale of woe" β one the castle's cold stone walls have never quite let go.
