Why is Newark Castle, Selkirkshire said to be haunted?
The ruined tower of Newark Castle, above the Yarrow Water in the Scottish Borders, carries one of the darkest reported episodes of the 17th-century civil wars: after the Battle of Philiphaugh in September 1645, Covenanter forces are said to have brought a hundred or more captured Royalist soldiers and camp followers to the castle grounds and executed them, some accounts claiming women and children were among the dead. Local tradition holds that on still nights, screams and the sound of musket fire can still be heard drifting from the field below the tower, and that the ground there has never taken well to crops. Sir Walter Scott, who knew the estate at nearby Bowhill well, referenced the massacre's grim memory in his own writing on the Borders.
