Why is Ordsall Hall said to be haunted?
Ordsall Hall has stood in Salford for more than 750 years, and for over three centuries it was the seat of the Radclyffe family, whose fortunes and sorrows are said to still echo through the timber-framed rooms. Local legend holds that Margaret Radclyffe, lady-in-waiting to Elizabeth I, pined to death after the death of her twin brother in battle around 1599, and her grieving figure, dressed in white, has been reported drifting through the Great Hall and the Star Chamber ever since. The hall's connection to the 1605 Gunpowder Plot, immortalised in William Harrison Ainsworth's 1842 novel Guy Fawkes, only deepened its brooding reputation. Visitors and staff describe cold spots that move independently around the Star Chamber, disembodied footsteps on the minstrels' gallery, and a heavy, watched feeling that several paranormal investigation groups have singled out as the strongest in the building.
