Why is Queensberry House said to be haunted?
Queensberry House on Edinburgh's Canongate carries one of Scotland's grimmest political legends. On 16 January 1707 — the very day the Duke of Queensberry rode to sign the Act of Union joining Scotland and England — his mentally disturbed eldest son, James Douglas, Earl of Drumlanrig, was left alone in the house. While the household celebrated downstairs, he reportedly seized a young kitchen boy, killed him, and was found roasting the body on a spit when servants returned. The story spread through Edinburgh as a dark omen for the Union itself, "the Union bought and sold for English gold," as the old rhyme goes. The building later served as a barracks and hospital before becoming part of the Scottish Parliament complex, where staff still point out the kitchen as the site of the killing.
