LOCATION
Why is RAF Elsham Wolds said to be haunted?
RAF Elsham Wolds opened in 1916 and became a key Bomber Command station in the Second World War, home first to 103 Squadron and its Lancaster crews, then to 576 Squadron from 1943. Over 800 airmen who flew from the base never returned, and the wind-scoured Lincolnshire wolds around the old runways are said to still carry traces of them. Former ground crew and later visitors reported the distant drone of engines when no aircraft were flying, the smell of aviation fuel on the disused perimeter track, and the shape of a lone airman in flying gear walking toward where the control tower once stood before fading from view. Local ghost-hunting groups who have surveyed the site describe sudden temperature drops near the old bomb store and unexplained radio static consistent with wartime frequencies. As one former airman recalled, "you could feel the ones who didn't come back were still walking the perimeter."
