Why is RAF Montrose said to be haunted?

Opened on 26 February 1913, RAF Montrose was the first operational military airfield in Britain, and by the First World War it had already earned a darker reputation: pilots training on flimsy early biplanes died at a startling rate, and airmen soon spoke of a "Grey Lady" and a phantom pilot in period flying gear seen walking between the hangars at dusk. The most repeated account involves Lieutenant Desmond Arthur, killed in a 1913 crash later blamed on faulty aircraft repairs; colleagues reported seeing his figure near the hangars for years afterward, always dressed for flight. The airfield, now home to a heritage centre, is still described by former RAF personnel as one of the most consistently reported haunted sites in Scottish military history.
