Why is Royal Lyceum Theatre said to be haunted?
Built in 1883 for theatrical managers Howard and Wyndham, Edinburgh's Royal Lyceum Theatre is said among its staff to house the ghost of a former doorman or stagehand, remembered in backstage tradition simply as "Angus." According to stories passed between generations of crew, he refuses to fully leave his post: a seat in the stalls or circle is occasionally found down after being folded up for the night, footsteps cross the empty stalls when the building is locked, and technicians report the odd sensation of being watched from the wings during late rehearsals. No written record fixes exactly who Angus was or when he worked at the theatre, but the name has stuck through decades of touring companies, and newer staff are usually told about him within their first week β treated less as a fright and more as an unofficial guardian of the old Victorian house.
