Why is Rufford Old Hall said to be haunted?

Rufford Old Hall's blackened oak Great Hall has sheltered the Hesketh family since the late 1400s, its hammer-beam roof and movable rood screen still intact after five centuries. Tradition holds that a young William Shakespeare performed here as a travelling player in the 1580s, briefly employed in the household of Sir Thomas Hesketh. Visitors and National Trust staff have long described a headless figure gliding across the hall at a height that makes no sense until you learn the floor was raised a couple of feet in Victorian times β€” the phantom, they say, is simply walking on the original Tudor floor level, its head lost below the modern boards. Footsteps and cold drafts are reported most often near the old screen.
