Why is Sker House said to be haunted?
Sker House, on the dunes near Porthcawl in south Wales, began as a Cistercian monastic grange more than 900 years ago before being rebuilt as a farmhouse in the 16th century β and it owes its lasting fame to Elizabeth Williams, "the Maid of Sker," a real 18th-century woman whose father is said to have locked her away to stop her marrying a travelling harpist named Thomas Evans. According to the story she never recovered from the separation and died young of grief, her tale later fictionalised in R. D. Blackmore's 1872 novel. Generations of residents and visitors have reported a woman's crying carried on the wind around the house at night, and some claim to have seen a pale figure at an upstairs window overlooking the sea, still watching for a musician who never returned.
