Why is St Ives, Cambridgeshire said to be haunted?

St Ives, the Cambridgeshire market town on the River Great Ouse, is home to one of the region's longest-documented ghosts: the Green Lady of the Golden Lion Hotel, first written up in an 1893 railway guide and still reported today. Witnesses describe a green-tinted female figure most active in rooms 12 and 13 of the old coaching inn, where she has allegedly tugged bedclothes off sleeping guests in the night. Local storytellers have tried to tie her to Oliver Cromwell, who lived in St Ives between 1631 and 1636, casting her as a mistress who met a tragic end -- though no historical record supports the claim. In the early 1970s the Cambridge University Society for Psychical Research spent three nights at the hotel with recording equipment and thermometers and found nothing unusual, yet the sightings have persisted for over a century, making the Green Lady part of the town's folklore.
