Why is The Cloisters (Letchworth) said to be haunted?
The Cloisters opened in 1907 in Letchworth, England's first Garden City, built at the expense of heiress Annie Lawrence as an experimental open-air school devoted to psychology, music, and the Arts and Crafts ideal of healthy, spiritually attuned living. Lawrence held sรฉances and psychical research meetings in the building's domed hall, and after the school failed and the property passed to the North Hertfordshire Masonic Centre in 1951, caretakers began reporting sounds of chanting and choral singing drifting from the empty central hall at night. Visitors have described a sudden chill crossing the open-air cloister walk regardless of the weather outside, and a grey-robed figure seen once at dusk near the entrance, gone the moment a second glance was taken. Some Freemasons who have used the hall for meetings admit they avoid being the last to leave.
