LOCATION
Why is The Skirrid Inn said to be haunted?
The Skirrid Mountain Inn, in the shadow of the Skirrid hill near Abergavenny, claims a history stretching back some 900 years and a grim sideline as an informal courtroom and execution site: local tradition holds that the notorious "Hanging Judge" George Jeffreys sentenced Monmouth Rebellion prisoners here in the 1680s, and that as many as 180 people were hanged from a beam on the staircase, its rope-worn grooves still pointed out to visitors today. Landlords and guests over the decades have reported cold, sudden pressure around the neck near that same beam, disembodied footsteps on the stairs, and a recurring sense of being watched in the upstairs rooms. The pub, which closed to the public in 2020 after decades as a working inn, remains one of the most cited haunted buildings in Wales.
