Why is Theatre Royal, Drury Lane said to be haunted?

The Theatre Royal, Drury Lane has stood on the same site since 1663, and the current building, opened in 1812, is home to Britain's most famous theatrical ghost: the Man in Grey, a figure in an 18th-century cloak, powdered wig, and tricorn hat, seen gliding along the upper circle in broad daylight since the Victorian era. During 1870s renovations, builders reportedly found a skeleton with a dagger between its ribs bricked into a walled-up passage near where the ghost is most often seen, lending the story an unusually concrete origin for theatrical folklore. Actors and stagehands consider a sighting of the Man in Grey good luck, a sign that the current production will be a hit, and cast members across generations, including stars performing in the 20th century, have reported seeing him during rehearsals. He has never been seen to frighten anyone β€” only to watch, quietly, from the same seat in the upper circle.
