What is Altamaha-ha?
Altamaha-ha, affectionately nicknamed Altie, is a serpent-like river monster said to inhabit the Altamaha River near Darien, on the Georgia coast. Witnesses describe a long, dark-gray or brown creature, sometimes with a series of humps breaking the water's surface, resembling a cross between a snake and a sturgeon. The legend draws on Native American stories from the region that spoke of a fearsome river spirit, later reinforced by scattered sightings reported by fishermen and residents from the 19th century onward, including a widely cited 1969 encounter in which two commercial fishermen described a large, dark creature surfacing near their boat. Altie has become a local mascot for Darien, appearing on murals and souvenirs as a point of civic pride. Marine biologists suggest that sightings likely stem from misidentified sturgeon, manatees, or large alligators moving through the murky, tannin-stained waters, animals whose shapes can appear serpentine at a glance. No carcass or verified photograph has ever confirmed a genuine sea-serpent-like species in the river.
