Why is Belgrave Hall said to be haunted?

Belgrave Hall was built between 1709 and 1713 for a Leicester wool merchant, a handsome Queen Anne house that later passed through a string of prosperous owners before the city took it over as a museum in the 1930s. It gained a national reputation for hauntings after a wave of poltergeist-style reports in the 1980s: museum staff described objects moving on empty shelves, unexplained footsteps on the servants' stairs, cold drafts in the nursery room, and the sudden, overpowering scent of lavender with no source. A 1980s paranormal investigation spent a night in the house and reported disturbed equipment and a recording of an unexplained voice. Local legend also speaks of a grey-cloaked figure seen crossing the walled garden at dusk. Staff still call the nursery "the cold room," and few volunteers will close up alone after dark.
