Why is Leicester Guildhall said to be haunted?
Leicester's timber-framed Guildhall, with sections dating to around 1390, served for centuries as the city's courtroom, council chamber, and site of guild feasts before a new town hall opened in 1876 β and its long service as a place of judgment left it, by local reputation, one of the most haunted buildings in the East Midlands. Staff and visitors have reported a "Grey Lady" seen in the library, unexplained footsteps crossing the Great Hall after closing, and cold spots near the old cells once used to hold prisoners awaiting trial. The building's history of interrogations and sentencing, including during the turbulence of the English Civil War, when Leicester itself was besieged and sacked in 1645, is often cited locally as the source of its unsettled atmosphere.
