Why is Bethesda Presbyterian Church (Camden, South Carolina) said to be haunted?
Robert Mills, the architect later responsible for the Washington Monument, designed this Camden church, completed in 1822 in a restrained Greek Revival style that made it one of the first buildings in America built explicitly as a Greek temple form. Its adjoining cemetery holds the graves of Revolutionary War soldiers and Confederate dead from the fighting around Camden, including officers killed at the 1780 Battle of Camden fought just outside town. Visitors to the churchyard have long reported cold spots between the older headstones and, less commonly, a figure in old-fashioned dress glimpsed among the trees near dusk, stories that predate any organized ghost tour of the historic district. The congregation continues to worship in the sanctuary, treating the graveyard's age and its stories as part of the same inheritance.
