Why is Eloise (psychiatric hospital) said to be haunted?

Named after Eloise Dickerson Davock, daughter of a Detroit postmaster, the Eloise complex in Westland, Michigan grew from a 19th-century poorhouse into one of the largest public institutions in the country, encompassing a psychiatric hospital, tuberculosis sanatorium, and infirmary that at its peak in the mid-20th century housed over 10,000 patients and even ran its own rail line and post office. Decades of overcrowding, primitive early-20th-century psychiatric treatments, and an unmarked potter's field holding thousands of unclaimed patients gave the site a grim reputation long before it closed in 1984; most of the roughly 70 buildings were later demolished, leaving only a handful, including the Kay Beard Building from 1931. Today those survivors host haunted-house attractions, escape rooms, and history tours.
