LOCATION
Why is Gracie Mansion said to be haunted?
Built in 1799 by shipping merchant Archibald Gracie on a bluff overlooking Hell Gate, this Federal-style house has served as the official residence of New York City's mayors since Fiorello La Guardia moved in during 1942. Long before that, the site had already changed hands through fire, war and shipwreck-driven fortune, and staff over the decades have described a lingering presence in the older wings β cold drafts through sealed rooms, furniture found rearranged overnight, and the sound of a woman's footsteps on the original staircase. Some tie the activity to the Gracie family itself, others to the earlier Colonial-era Belview Mansion that once stood on the same ground. "Every mayor who's lived here has a story they don't tell reporters," a former City Hall aide once quipped. Now a National Historic Landmark and city-owned museum, Gracie Mansion still hosts official functions in rooms locals insist are never entirely empty.
